Pope & Talbot operated a wood treatment site in St. Helens from 1912 to 1960. The Port purchased the property in 1963 and has been working with the Oregon DEQ to assess site contamination and determine a cleanup plan. In 2023, the DEQ issued a Record of Decision approving the recommended cleanup actions to address both upland and in-water creosote contamination. The Port is applying for an EPA Brownfield Cleanup Grant to help fund the cleanup work.
A copy of the draft grant application, including the draft Analysis of Brownfields Cleanup Alternatives (ABCA), will be available at the Port office and at www.portofcolumbiacounty.org for public review and comment starting Oct. 30 through Nov. 13. Written comments on the draft application can be sent to inquiries@portofcolumbiacounty.org.
