Pope & Talbot operated a wood treatment site in St. Helens from 1912 to 1960. The Port purchased the property in 1963 and has been working with the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) for several years to assess site contamination and determine a cleanup plan.

The 42-acre site is divided into five priority action areas (PAA). In 2023, the DEQ issued a Record of Decision approving the recommended cleanup actions to address both upland and in-water creosote contamination. The Port is now applying for grants to help fund the cleanup work.
